Dante was born and raised by his mother and father in Blackthorn City, and from very early on he struggled to survive. His family always struggled keeping jobs and putting food on the table. At a young age Dante went and worked wherever he could to help his family. His mother, Maria used to be a trainer before before meeting Dante's father, Ricardo, a man with a gambling addiction. By the time they had Dante, they both spent most of Maria's earnings as a trainer, and continued to do so with the money Dante brought in until he up and vanished when Dante was 11.

Maria always got sick very often, so Dante would have to work even more to earn some money. Whenever he had to, he resorted to stealing food like bread and milk from the store so he could keep his mother well fed. As much as Dante knew, she never found out about it, and being able to provide for his family made him genuinely happy. When he was around 20, his mother became deathly ill and passed away quickly. Before she died she passed down her very first pokemon Kangaskhan to Dante. Distraught, Dante heard about an organization called Team Rocket and decided to join up. He wanted to use Kangaskhan to become rich and not have to worry about going days without food and shelter.

Dante cared only about himself and he pushed Kangaskhan to the limit everyday as he did jobs for Team Rocket, yet no matter what he did he never got anywhere and eventually he found himself alone. Team Rocket was beaten not once but twice by some "Heroes" and he had mistreated Kangaskhan so badly she had stopped listening to his commands. Not sure what to do, Dante found himself by the Lake of Rage late at night. During his darkest moment, a light appeared and saved him.

A Dratini popped out of the water, and while he was unable to speak to Dante an aura of peace reached out and surrounded both Dratini and Dante. Dante's mind became clear and he realized that there was still hope. He knew he was nothing without Pokemon and that if he were to accomplish anything he needed to stop seeing them as tools and saw them as comrades that were there to help him achieve his goals. He would become a better trainer and he would help pick up the pieces of Team Rocket and do his best to lead them a path to riches and success.
