The warm sun shone down on Rylee as she left her house. Today was finally the day, the day she would start her Pokemon journey. According to her dad, she just needed to go to Professor Oak’s lab to receive her first Pokemon. Rylee had thought long and hard about which of the three starters to choose. Should she go with Bulbasaur? The freckles all over his sky blue face would sure look adorable. Or perhaps Charmander? The way she imagined the little guy holding his tail close like a blanket always delighted her. Or Squirtle? The thought of him scampering around on its hind legs or on all fours, or even twirling around in its shell made Rylee giggle every time. She continued to think over her decision as she started her walk across town to the Pokemon Lab.
“Oh! This is so hard!” Rylee complained to herself. “I’m sure they all look even more adorable than I could ever imagine them anyway! I’ll just pick whichever one feels right!”
There it was, coming into view was the glass walled Pokemon Lab owned by the world famous Professor Oak. Through the crystal clear walls, Rylee could see Pokemon species she recognized from the way her father had described them to her. Still, there were many others that Rylee hadn’t even imagined. Rylee broke into a full on sprint to reach the Lab as quickly as possible. As she neared the front door, it slid open to reveal the professor himself standing there, he’d been expecting her.

“Rylee, your father told me I could expect to see you here today,” Professor Oak said warmly as Rylee struggled to catch her breath. Perhaps she shouldn’t have ran, after all she’d never been the healthiest of kids with all the medical issues she’d grown up with. “You’re here to pick your very first Pokemon so you can start your journey just like he did, so let’s get right to it. Follow me.”
Professor Oak led Rylee down a nearby hallway to a room that opened up like a cavern. In the center of the room stood a large machine with three Pokeballs contained within it. Professor Oak walked to the machine and pressed the release button on each of the three Pokeballs. In a second, three Pokemon appeared before Rylee and the Professor. On Rylee’s right stood a bright orange lizard with a light underbelly. “Char! Charmander!” it exclaimed in delight as it began to chase its flaming tail around the room, making a grand show for Rylee as it did so. Next to the Charmander squatted a blue creature with a bulbous growth sprouting from its back. “Bulba! Bulbasaur, saur!” it cheered as it ran up to Rylee to nuzzle her leg. Rylee bent down to pat the Bulbasaur on the head. Last, but not least, a turtle shell sat on the ground, unmoving. Rylee took a few steps toward the third and final Pokemon to make sure it was alright.
“Hey little guy,” Rylee said in a soothing voice as she kneeled to the ground. “You okay in there?”
Slowly, a sky blue head poked its way out of the shell, the Pokemon’s eyes were closed, but slowly fluttered open as it yawned. “Squirtle…Squirt…” it said sluggishly before letting out a soft yawn. As the Squirtle’s mouth opened, a stream of bubbles floated lazily out and popped around Rylee.

“So, have you made your decision Rylee?” the Professor asked.
“I…I don’t know,” Rylee answered. “They’re all even better than I’d ever dreamed. And they’re all so cute I don’t know which one to pick! Which one do you think I should take?”
“Well, that’s not for me to decide,” the Professor answered. “A trainer must pick their own companion.”
As the Professor said this, a loud noise comes from down the hall. “Pika! Chu!!!” shouted the voice of an unseen Pokemon as a flash of golden light came from the lobby.
“What was that?” Rylee asked in awe.
“I…I’m not sure,” Professor Oak answers, clearly concerned. “It sounded like the Pikachu that had been recently brought here for study, but I don’t know why it would be letting off an attack in here, it’s always been so docile.”
“A Pikachu!” Rylee exclaimed, that had always been her favorite Pokemon to hear about from her father. “Can I meet it?”
“I don’t know if that’s the best idea at the moment, Rylee,” the Professor answers. “I would wait until-“
Before the Professor could finish his thought, the Pikachu in question ran into the room followed by one of the Professor’s assistants.

As the Pikachu entered, its ears and heart-shaped tail perked up and a small jolt of electricity sparked from its rosy cheeks. In a flash it ran to Rylee and scampered up her to rest on the young girl’s shoulder.
“Professor, I’m sorry,” the assistant began. “As soon as your guest arrived, this little one just went nuts. We tried to keep her up in the research center, but she wasn’t having any of it!”
“How unusual,” Professor Oak mused. “And she ran straight here, I take it?”
“Yes sir,” the assistant confirmed.
“Well Rylee,” the Professor turned his attention back to his guest, “I told you it’s a trainer’s job to pick their Pokemon companion. That was only partly true. It seems today a Pokemon his picked its human companion. If you’ll have her that is.”
“You mean it!? Really?” Rylee exclaimed in uncontained joy. “Of course I’ll take Pikachu with me!”
“Wonderful!” the Professor clapped his hands together as he spoke. “Then it’s decided, from this day forth, you and Pikachu will go on your very own Pokemon journey together. Now for the most important part. Would you like to give your Pikachu a nickname?”
“Yeah!” Rylee said as she looked to her new companion. “How do you like the name Maya?” Rylee asked the Pikachu on her shoulder.
“Pika!” Pikachu called out happily.
“Alright Maya,” Rylee said. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we’ll be together all the way! Thank you Professor Oak!”
“Don’t mention it Rylee,” Professor Oak said with a wave of his hand. “Now stay safe on your journey, and before you go, speak with my receptionist at the front door. She’ll have some things to help start you on your journey.”

Beyond the connecting hallway, Rylee reentered the lobby and looked for the receptionist Professor Oak had mentioned. Off to the right hand side was a long, low table with a sharply dressed woman standing there. That had to be her. Rylee approached the woman.
“You must be Rylee,” the woman said. “The Professor instructed me to give you this once your meeting adjourned,” the woman hands Rylee a small red tablet device. There’s a small button below the screen, which Rylee pushed immediately.
“Welcome to the wonderful world of Pokemon!” the machine said, “I am Dexter, your guide. As you meet new Pokemon, I will store their data here.” With that the machine shut itself off. The receptionist produced six Pokeballs from behind the counter.
“These are also yours. One for your new Pikachu, and five more to help get you on your way,” the woman says as she hands the Pokeballs across the counter to Rylee. “I’d be careful about putting that Pikachu in a Pokeball though. From the moment it got here it’s shone a strong dislike of being contained in one of these.”
“That’s fine, and thank you,” Rylee said. “I was planning on having her out and about to keep me company anyway."
“Pika Pika!” Maya said as though she were very grateful.
“You’re very welcome. Feel free to stop by if you need to see the Professor for anything else,” the receptionist told Rylee. With that, Rylee left the Pokemon Lab to start her very own journey with Maya at her side.
