Emerson hated Pokemon.

It wasn't her family; her family was supportive of Em, had Pokemon in the house growing up, and were completely content with the idea of their middle child of three going off on a grandiose adventure in the wide world of Pokemon just as her brother, and later sister, had. It was more of the fact that it was what was expected and welcomed that Emerson didn't like. If her family had told her she was forbidden from traveling the Kanto region with a Pokemon by her side, she would be all for it. Perhaps it had something to do with being the middle child, but Emerson wanted to be noticed, even if that took rebellion in its largest or smallest forms.

From a young age, Emerson displayed her disdain for the pocket monsters, and steered clear of any talk of journeys and finding meaning in life. It was too much for the ten year old to handle. Instead, she chose to further her education past what was necessary, focusing on her love of art, and particularly painting. It wasn't until she was eighteen that Emerson even became slightly interested in Pokemon, though she would never admit it.

When Emerson went off to boarding school, her parents gifted her a Poliwag. They didn't want their daughter going somewhere unfamiliar without a piece of home, as her brother had a Politoed on his team.

Emerson and Poliwag didn't get along, however. Emerson found Poliwag to be more of a nuisance than anything in her eyes. Poliwag did all he could to gain Emerson's love, but it was a long time before the girl even willingly would make time for Poliwag in her schedule. When the two came home for the holidays, her parents were shocked to find the two's close connection. They were inseparable from then on. Emerson's love for water type Pokemon only grew from there throughout her education. By the time Emerson was twenty two years old, Emerson's opinion on Pokemon had done a complete turnaround. She would travel Kanto to face the gym leaders, though it was hard when she focused on one type of Pokemon. Her twenty-first birthday was the day that Emerson defeated the eighth gym in Kanto, soon after receiving an offer from the retiring Cerulean City gym leader to take their place. Nothing would be more fitting for Emerson, who actually grew up in Cerulean City and would still be near her family while doing what she loved.

For five years now, Emerson has reigned over the Cerulean City gym with a surprising grip and she has grown through her multiple challengers. She understands that she needs to win some and lose some, and it's just the part of the job to give out badges to at least some of the aspiring Pokemon masters that face her. Now, however, she craves something more than her day to day routine of work and home life that seems to be the same days on repeat.
