[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
ITS YOU AND ME, I KNOW IT'S MY DESTINY
Biography
Matthew was never one to listen to authority. Ever since he was a child, he had been restricted from training Pokemon, and was always taught that they were to be subservient slaves, not companions. Nevertheless, he persisted. Matthew would find ways to make enough pocket money to buy Poke Balls, and would always bring a new Pokemon home. From Sentrets, to Rattatas, to even that one time he found that shiny Girafarig. He was always catching something new, and much to his chagrin, were constantly released by his parents, who were more than happy to discipline their child in ways that bordered (or even qualified as, depending on the jurisdiction,) abuse.
Eventually, he had enough. Writing a profanity-laden manifesto directed towards his parents, Matt roasted their antiquated behavior, their unneccesary punishments, and most importantly, the treatment of both him and his sister. He left it where everyone could eventually see it, and left, not knowing that eventually he was just making things worse for his sister, who stayed behind.
With no money, no Pokemon, and nothing but the clothes on his back, Matthew ran, and ran, and ran. He eventually reached New Bark Town. His logic told him that Pokemon Labs were the quickest, easiest way to get a starter. Young Matthew met up with Elm, telling him his life story. Elm, merciful as always, offered him the choice of three Pokemon, and quickly chose the Cyndaquil, not even batting an eye at the other two choices. Naming him Vesuvius, after some volcano he read about in a Fairy Tale about some weird, mystical place called Pompeii. What kind of weird name was that anyway? Matt was a bit glad that he lived in a world with much more realistic names, like Coronet, or Unova.
And so, Matthew's journey began. Little by little, the young trainer began to win fights, and before he knew it, Vesuvius had grown to a healthy, powerful Quilava. Matt's confidence grew with his experience, but remembered that simply one Pokemon wasn't going to cut it, a lesson he learned after his perfect win streak was broken at the first gym in Violet City. Maybe he wasn't as good as he thought, and could benefit from humbling down a bit.
Over the next few months, Matt would keep traveling around Johto, and eventually hopped on the Magnet Train towards Saffron City. Matt's adventures revolved more about exploration and growth, as opposed to the typical quest of gathering badges. In fact, badges were usually the last thing on his mind. As Matt's accesibility to different methods of travel grew, he began travelling towards all the different regions in the world. At one point held the strange distinction of having more than 20 badges, but not one region's collection was ever complete.
Another strange distinction of the trainer was his affinity for music, and, strangely by extension, his refusal to accept any prize money from Pokemon battles, instead, spending some of his precious time in city squares all across the world playing distinctful tunes with his violin, subsisting off of tips alone. It clearly wasn't much, but much like his sister, he was stubborn and fueled by passion.
Eventually, the trainer found himself in Hoenn, winning over (and subsequently breaking) the heart of the Fire-type gym leader, Flannery. The relationship lasted all but twelve days, and at the butt end of it all, Matt found himself chased out of town by a scorned gym leader and her Torkoal. He'll continue to claim it wasn't his fault, but he's not fooling anyone. He might be good at reading others, but he's never been the best at saying the right thing at the right time, and tends to put his foot in his mouth. He continues to keep the reason behind the break up a secret (but witness accounts state that he may or may not have insinuated something about her weight).
Years after the start of his adventure, having traveled to as many different regions as he could, Matt finally took a small sabbatical back home. Of all of his incomplete badge selections, his homeland's had to be the most incomplete. It's not that his Pokemon were weak, at this point they were anything but. His itch for exploration, and straying off the path led him off the trail, as soon as he found alternative transportation. His reputation, however, followed him as he went. People often remembered him, not as "The Musical Trainer", as he would prefer, but rather "That Weird Kid with the Violin who Doesn't Accept Prize Money." Yeah... it's too long and bulky, but Matt couldn't couldn't shape the semantics with which he was remembered with. At least he was remembered for something.
As news of his return spread across Johto, especially the fact that he came back to actually challenge gyms this time, the Elite Four called him up and gave him a conditional offer: if he was able to complete JUST ONE collection of badges, and beat the league, they would accept him as part of their own. Of course, while this was a distinctful honor, he refused at least four times throughout his adventures in Johto. However, this all changed the day he returned to Ecruteak City to challenge Morty (which he conveniently left for last, so he could keep away from Ecruteak as much as possible).
Matt managed to see an interesting display the night he arrived back to his hometown. Witnessing the escape of his younger sister Noelle, he said nothing. He did not approach her, nor did he do anything to make his prescence known. Watching her run off into the distance, Matt's heart warmed up as he realized that even little, submissive, dainty Noelle could become a trainer. As soon as Matt got his final badge from (what should normally be) the fifth gym leader, he made one last call. He warned the Elite Four that he accepted their offer, and to watch themselves, because he was more than ready to tear up Victory Road on his way there.
Matt, having never challenged a Pokemon League, heavily underestimated their power. He won his fights, but ultimately found himself against those with much more advanced strategies and techniques than the run-of-the-mill Gym Leaders he was easily thrashing once he got strong enough. Every fight he was in was full of suspense, they ended up down to the wire, and never left Matt with more than one Pokemon standing. Not since he had been a rookie trainer had he been this excited and thrilled by a close fight. Maybe he wouldn't mind dealing with trainers this advanced on a daily basis.
As soon as Matt reached the Champion, however, he stood no chance. Matt hadn't lost a fight in a long, long time, much less in such an embarassing thrashing. In shock and horror over his appaling defeat, Matt was reassured by the Champion that he fought well, and that the open post was still available.
"C'mon, Matt. If I let my subordinates beat me, I wouldn't be considered the Champion, would I?"
Matt smiled wryly. Maybe he couldn't claim the title of champion, but that strange kid with the violin still made it to the ranks of the Elite.
