Kenneth Brenton was born in the great and prosperous Saffron City. There was nothing special about his parents. They both worked full-time jobs trying to survive in the world, and then they had a child. Neither of them thought they could handle the burden on top of all the work they were doing, and it took everything they had to survive. So when the child was born, he was left at an orphanage in the city, where he could get real care and attention. However, the life that Kenneth would have is not the one that his parents would have hoped him to have.

The orphanage was not a bad place to grow up, the people running it were not evil, but there was something missing, at least that was the feeling that would constantly be appearing in Kenneth’s mind. Even as he played with other children, he noticed that he felt alone amongst all of them. No one had become a friend, and there was not much he could do to join in. This is when he met a companion that would stay with him his entire life.

When he turned twelve he was wandering the streets when he found a group of thugs beating up on what looked to be a pokemon in an alley. As he went to investigate he knocked over a can and his presence was suddenly known. Before he could do anything the thugs were on him asking why he was there. In a moment of stupidity, Kenneth said that only the weak pick on something that can’t fight back. This earned him a great “roughing” up. Nothing was broken after the group were finished with him, but he could feel his body aching. He then felt the warmth of a tongue licking his face, it was the pokemon that he had saved. The growlithe pup was happily licking his face and befriended him. Kenneth’s initial attempts to have the pokemon leave him alone all failed, and he soon gave in and was now the proud partner of a growlithe. Wanting to give his partner a strong name, he called him Cerberus, so that one day he could become a strong pokemon.

The partnership between Kenneth and Cerberus was the beginning of a new time for the two. They became inseparable, and were able to become a little bit happier because of their friendship. It was around this time that he began falling into a group that would allow him to become part of a family. At least it was a family of sorts. Kenneth and Cerberus joined Team Rocket together and were accepted with open arms by their new “family”. Upon joining the organization, one of the first tasks Kenneth was given was to capture a Vulpix on Cinnabar Island. The owner was an old man that, as far as Kenneth was told, had taken the Vulpix from its family.

Kenneth and Cerberus arrived on Cinnabar Island and attempted to perform their mission of stealing the Vulpix back from this old man. On their first attempt, Kenneth and Cerberus failed. They failed again on their second try, and then also on their third and fourth attempts. Many attempts later and Kenneth and Cerberus managed to capture the Vulpix, only when they gained this “victory” it did not seem right. The two showed up to the old man and returned the Vulpix to him while apologizing for their actions. The old man accepted their apology, but commented on the bond between the two. After a sudden decision he said that he would take Kenneth in under his care and teach him how to truly become a great partner with pokemon.

Kenneth did not like this, but he would eventually see the old man as a real member of a family that actually cared for him, not just the group that he finally felt a part of in Team Rocket. Under the old man’s care Kenneth was able to strengthen his partnership with Cerberus.

Over the years he became a proficient trainer, following in the footsteps that he was being taught in. Cerberus had evolved, and he had gotten many more pokemon to join him and stand alongside him. When he turned twenty-two, his mentor took him aside and chose him to become his successor of the Cinnabar Island Gym. Kenneth accepted this and became the new Gym Leader. In his position he has maintained the policy of the Gym serving as a sanctuary for fire pokemon of all types.
