❝ | Just you wait, one day I'll become the best trainer around and then you'll know our names! | ❞ |
A young girl was walking through the streets of Saffron City. The girl looked like a tourist, at least to the residents. It was not common to find someone walking with a skip in their step, especially someone who was above the age of ten and was seemingly by themselves. Alicia had a large grin on her face as her eyes danced between everything there was to offer in the city. There was just so much. Even though she had grown up in Goldenrod City, this place was new and very different. The most obvious reason to her was that she was here as a Pokemon Trainer, on her very own adventure.
“Where should I go first?” She asked while putting a hand over her eyes to block the sun from blinding her wandering gaze. There were quite a few different shops, each lining the different lines of the street. However, it was one shop in particular that immediately caught her attention. “Target acquired!”
With that the young lass continued her stride to reach her new target. Alicia stopped in front of the store and pressed her face in against the window. Just on the other side were the sweet delights of a bakery. All types of bread, pastries, and other delicious goods. She could even get a smell from outside, it reminded her of home. “This place’ll do just fine,” she muttered to herself while heading towards the door. The notice next to the door took her attention.
”20% Discount to Pokemon Trainers – Must show one Pokemon to receive!”
Alicia’s eyes sparkled at this. Not only could she enjoy sweet things, but Zephie would be able to accompany her. She opened the door to the shop and immediately pulled out the pokeball belonging to Zephie, marked with a green leaf sticker. “Come on out Zephie,” she said while the ball opened and the small Chikorita appeared with an excited “Chikaaaa!”
Now all that was standing between the two and their discount was the line, which seeing their enthusiasm would be an easy obstacle.

Summer was always a popular time of year for trainers to start on their journeys. All that meant to Samael was more kids crowding the city: excited, bright-eyed, and chatty, with a youthful optimism that almost made him gag. Samael wasn’t really a pessimist, but jeeze, young trainers slathered on their dreams and friendship crap thick. It got annoying.
At least the high population of trainers meant lots of Pokemon. Most of the young kids weren’t dumb enough to bug him about a battle, the way he looked, but he liked to take a peek at the different kinds of Pokemon around.
And he liked to take advantage of all the trainer deals that went on in town. Samael wasn’t really a trainer; he battled Pokemon, but he wasn’t about collecting them for a Pokedex or challenging gyms. But his tough appearance and his owning a number of Pokemon meant he passed for a trainer when he had to. Today, he eyed one of the better bakeries of the area - namely, he eyed the offer on the window. A grin played across his features - really, it was just about all that could be seen of his features, the way his bleached blond hair hung in his face.
“20% off sounds tasty, don’t it?” He muttered seemingly to himself, chuckling. Samael’s laugh was about as unsettling as his smile.
With his hands stashed in the pockets of his hoodie, he trailed inside to find a few people already lined up, at which his smile dropped. “Aww…” But he wasn’t deterred. He stepped into line behind some young girl, probably a trainer, since she had an unusual Pokemon with her. He gazed down at it. “Hey, what kinda Pokemon is that?” His hand drew from his pocket to point down at the creature. Obviously a Grass-type, but he had never seen one like it before.

Zephie turned around to face the person that was speaking about her. The grass-type pokemon did not take very kindly to being talked about instead of being talked too. There was a very big difference the to small pokemon. At least in her mind. "Chika!" she exclaimed, getting the attention of her human partner.
Alicia turned around to face the person after hearing both their question and Zephie's sounds at having been ignored. "Don't worry to much about it Zephie, I'm sure he didn't know," she consoled her partner. "Zephie is a Chikorita, a grass-type pokemon originally from the Johto region. Oh, also so she knows, you weren't trying to ignore her were you? She doesn’t like being talked about."
The small Zephie began to t run around in circles around Alicia’s feet, trying to get more attention from her partner. "Right, right," Alicia said as she leaned down and picked up the pokemon. In her arms Zephie began to hum from her contentment at being in a comfortable place. The humming of a Chikorita was similar to the purring of other feline pokemon, such as a Meowth or Purrloin. Now that her partner pokemon was safely in a happy place, Alicia gave a friendly smile to the person, “By the way I’m Alicia, and with Zephie I’m gonna become the best Pokemon Trainer around.”
At this statement, some of the older folks in the bakery gave a smiling face to the young girl’s enthusiasm and energy in something that she was dedicated to. Then she remembered that she had seen a few other pokemon when she walked in. “Is there a pokemon that you’ll be showing for the discount?” she asked while looking for any sort of indicator that this individual might have any pokemon.

The little thing looked kind of angry. But then its owner turned to answer. “A Chiko-wha? I’ll just call it a chickie. It’s kinda ugly, haha.” He smiled wide, apparently amused. But at the girl’s inquiry, Samael’s smile fell. “Uhh..” Beneath his bangs, he arched a brow about ignoring the Pokemon. “.. Guess not,” he murmured in reply with obvious uncertainty. He watched the girl pick up her Pokemon to carry it, at which it looked much less irritated.
People who treated their Pokemon like people were a little weird, he thought. Some Pokemon were pretty smart, and they definitely had personalities, but they were more like pets than friends. At least, that was how Samael saw it.
“Is that right? Kehehehe. You got a lotta competition, girlie.” Probably a good chunk of the city, in fact. “You’re gonna need better Pokemon than that,” he taunted with a grin, pointing for the Chikorita again. “Grass-types are pretty crappy, y’know? But you’ll catch more,” he added as if in encouragement, patting the top of Alica’s head and tousling her hair briefly. Samael towered over the girl - and most people, at 6’3”.
The blond gave a thoughtful tilt of his head, withdrawing his hand to scratch at his own head some. “Yeah. Dunno if you wanna see it, though.” Another grin crept across his lips, a rather mischievous smile this time.

Vating was walking through Saffron with a certain Yorlam next to him, holding Vapor and rubbing her face in Vapor's mane, causing the little eevee to laugh a little as it was feeling tickled. He heard from an old friend back in his day that they had this store that was offering 20% discounts for trainers. He decided that it'd be nice to have lunch at a bakery, seeing as they never really get out of Cerulean City. While technically, Yorlam wasn't a trainer yet, she would be in about a month, so he'd just mention it and toss out Aqueous to go in with him. He was a gym leader and could probably get Yorlam in either way, or just put her on his bill.
The two got into the bakery behind some blond guy and a girl with a Chickorita having a chat. Of course Yorlam wanted to go talk to the trainer as she hadn't seen that much out there yet and was curious about the pokemon. Vating knew her interested look by now and gave a nod, allowing her to look. The nine year old girl went up to the Chickorita and said, "Uhh, what kinda of pokemon is that? I've never seen it before." Vapor was still in her arms looking at the Chikorita, saying, "Eev. (So, how are you?)" Vating is still standing off to the back, silently observing, but he probably stood out very clearly with the blastoise standing next to him.

Ugly?! Zephie isn’t ugly! the girl argued internally. There was no way that her precious partner was ugly. Zephie gave a loud “Rita!” to the taller man’s comment. “Even with a lot of competition, that just means we get to have a much larger journey!” she exclaimed with excitement.
At the comment of grass-types being crappy, Zephie completely turned away from the stranger. It was a rude way of talking about her. She was not weak. Before she could give any more remarks out of anger, Alicia spoke up. “That’s okay, we’re both weak right now, but that just means we have room to grow!” Just as this comment was said, she felt her hair being tussled. Once the hand was removed and the blond man questioned whether she wanted to see it or not. “Of course I want to see it!” Alicia said with an enthusiastic sparkle in her eyes.
Just as she finished her request to see the pokemon, a stranger, younger than her appeared and asked what kind of pokemon was in her arms. “Oh, this is Zephie, she is a Chikorita!”
As this encounter was going on, bakery staff hurried to intervene in what could have been damage to the store’s entrance. They helped keep the doors open so that the wide water pokemon would not break through their doors. Once it was through they returned to their stations to help other customers.

More of a journey, and more chances to call it quits. Beginning Pokemon trainers were often so determined, convinced they were going to be better than the sea of amateur trainers who were stuck at their current skill level. Samael scoffed. “Sure, sure,” he replied, brushing off the girl’s relentless optimism. He spared a moment to eye the Blastoise that had appeared near the entrance, feeling briefly disappointed he had missed how it had managed to get through the doors. Or maybe its trainer had let it out right in the store. He disregarded the show-off with another short scoff, then glanced for the girl— What was her name again? Something with an ‘A’. Maybe Ali. Whatever. Samael was pretty bad about remembering people’s names until he gave them a nickname, a habit of his not everyone took kindly to.
The blond grinned. “Hahh? Alright girlie, if you're sure. Hey, Haunter,” he referred to his Pokemon - which started to materialize from the air beside him, apparently having been there all the while. Their broad smiles nearly seemed to match. The Haunter was a particularly dark violet in coloration, its large eyes and jack-o-lantern -esque maw giving a faint, eerie glow. Characteristic of most Ghost Pokemon, a chill seemed to creep into the creature’s vicinity, setting some of the people in line on edge as they eyed the Ghost-type warily.
The Haunter’s jaws parted a little further as it gave a low, unnerving call in greeting, something between a growl and a hiss but that somehow managed to sound a little cheerful. Hhhaunterr.

Vating and Aqueous calmly waited in the line standing next to each other and trying to take up as little room as possible, though, lets face it, it wasn't gonna happen and they were probably annoying so many people in the line. The pair watched the trainer Yorlam was talking to closely, noting the Chikorita and guessing that this was a rookie who was just starting her adventure. He remembered back when he was a boy with Aqueous at his side, back when Aqueous was cute and small. That was the life he wish he still had, wishing he never quit for a while.
Yorlam looked at the Zephie with great interest, saying, "She's so cool and different than the usual pokemon." She then motions down to Vapor, who was smiling in her usual adorable way, "Eevee!" The little Eevee said it with such glee and joy that one could easily see identify it from anywhere in the room. She saw the Haunter and moved away a little out of nervousness, but quickly did her best to ignore the chill on the back of her neck.

Alicia’s eyes beamed with even more excitement when she heard the pokemon being introduced. “A Haunter!” She exclaimed as she saw the creature form next the man. It was a trait that she knew ghost pokemon, especially the trio of Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar, had. They could transform into a truly ghost-like state and be invisible. The chill that went through the air from the pokemon’s presence did not seem to effect Alicia, but it did leave a visible sign on Zephie. The Chikorita withdrew itself and huddled down further into Alicia’s arms. Before she could watch the ghost pokemon any more to learn more about it, she finally processed the remark about Zephie not being like other ordinary pokemon.
“Of course, Zephie is one-of-a-kind! No other pokemon could replace her,” she smiled back to the girl and then looked down to Zephie and gave her a reassuring smile and pulled her closer to let her be more comfortable. “By the way, it’s nice to meet you Haunter,” she grinned, happy to be able to see a new type of pokemon.
After all these things going on, it appeared that it was finally Alicia’s turn at the counter. She turned around sharply when she was called at by one of the attendants. “Yes! I’ll have two of the Sweet Maple Breads and two of the Sitrus Breads please! Also, this is Zephie, my partner!”
The attendant grabbed the breads and put them in two separate bags before handing them over the counter. Once the cost came up, Alicia withdrew her money and handed it over to the attendant before hopping back to where the others were. “The bread here looks delicious, and you can take this from an expert on baking bread, anything you get should be great!”
