Vating was born and raised in Vermillion City. He grew up there and quickly grew a fondness to all the water types, something that just happened as he lived in a portside town. Once he was ten, he raced outta his house with a Squirtle named Aqueous he had selected as his starter. That marked the beginning of his journey through the region. It wasn't long before he caught his first pokemon, a buizel he named Zeal. Together they went on their grand journey and had conquered two gyms together, by then Aqueous had grown into a Wartortle and showed a knack for not fainting or even really losing ground.

They party continued on their journey and eventually found a psyduck that they caught and he named Ducksin. Ducksin was quite the pokemon and during the third gym they battled, the grass gym, he had saved their team with a confusion attack, stopping many of the grass/poison pokemon in their path. Followed by Zeal, being capable of outspeeding most of the pokemon there and holding the advantage that way. They easily conquered the next two gyms after that and Zeal had evolved into a Floatzel, along with Ducksin evolving into a Golduck.

During the path to their sixth badge, he had come across a Staryu that after catching it, he had named Twinkle. Twinkle was especially useful throughout her time in Vating's team, but never seemed to be capable of evolving. During the sixth gym battle in Fuschia City, Ducksin had used zen headbutt to get the crew through the entire gym, up until the end where it was up to Aqueous to take the win, he did.

On his way to the fire gym, Vating came across a certain horsea he named Stalion. He wouldn't find another pokemon to catch for quite some time now. Upon reaching the fire gym, he had easily stomped the opposing team and went on his way. He was now going for eight and had his team ready to go. When he made it, he wasn't expecting what he got. He battled to the last member of his party, again Aqueous, and lost. It wasn't until a week later until he finally won when Aqueous evolved mid battle into a blastoise and finally got him the win.

With eight badges and only the elite four to go, he marched in proudly and ready. He fought his way to the very end of the first elite four and lost. It took him almost a month to defeat the first member, but after that, it was just going through the steps and eventually he did it, he made it to the end. Only to find that the champion was leagues ahead of him. By then he resolved to end his journey here, feeling accomplished to making it this far.

For the next twelve years, he and his team relaxed and lived in peace while they grew up. He then decided to pick up the pokeball again after feeling a deep emptiness inside of him due to nothing ever really happening, though didn't want to go on another journey. He settled for working to become a gym leader and after eight years of training and preparation, he took over the Cerulean Gym as the new gym leader. For the next year he would capture his childhood enjoyment of battling and long-time hard work and eventually found an egg under his care. After it hatched about a month later, he found an eevee he named Vapor, to help fit in his his theme. Vapor was often trained on the battlefield due to having lots of water around it and eventually became adept at hopping across the platforms and even diving under for short periods of time, a pokemon he'd be proud to use in a gym battle. Eventually that month, he adopted a nine year old child named Yorlam who often helped as a referee at his gym or looked after his pokemon for her own enjoyment. The group held down the gym until we reach the present where they still are holding the gym.
